The US foreign policy usually develops in several ways which differ in terms of methods used to achieve this or that goal on the international scene. Right-wing Republicans, or neoconservatives, are known for promoting the most aggressive approaches in foreign policy: they see Russia, as well as some other countries, as the quintessence of evil. Many of them are members of radical protestant sects. There are two most prominent figures among them: the former Alaska governor Sarah Palin and Congresswoman Ileana Ros-Lehtinen.
Sarah Palin took a break in her political career after her oldest daughter Bristol had announced her pregnancy exactly during her mother`s election campaign of 2008. Since Palin had always been known for her traditional views on marriage and abortion, her daughter’s pregnancy could not but affect her ratings. But what is really worrying about Palin is her links to a fundamentalist eschatological, Pentecostal church which is outside of the mainstream of modern Christian denominations. Throughout the US history such kind of religious organizations had had quite a great influence on policies plotted in Washington. For example, the former head of the National Association of Evangelicals (NAE), Ted Haggard, used to be a close adviser to the former President George W. Bush and member of the Committee on National Policy. Meanwhile, dispensationalism (a nineteenth-century evangelical development which began to evolve thanks to dispensationalist leaders, Cyrus Scofield being one of them) places Russia on the list of ‘evil states’ the US and Israel will be fighting against together before the world ends.
Sarah Palin belongs to the American Evangelical movement known variously as the Third Wave Movement, or the New Apostolic Reformation or the Joel’s Army movement.
The Third Wave movement is based on the idea that in the end times there will be an outpouring of supernatural powers on a group of Christians that will take authority over the existing church and the world. The believing Christians of the world will be reorganized under the Fivefold Ministry and the church restructured under the authority of Prophets and Apostles and others anointed by God. The young generation will form “Joel’s Army” to rise up and battle evil and retake the earth for God. (1)
The movement`s ideologist, Peter Wagner, defined his view of what he called ‘The New Apostolic Reformation”: ‘Since 2001, the body of Christ has been in the Second Apostolic Age. The apostolic/prophetic government of the church is now in place…. We began to build our base by locating and identifying with the intercessory prayer movements. This time, however, we feel that God wants us (this phrase reminds me of George W. Bush saying that he was told by God to bomb Iraq-L.S) to start governmentally, connecting with the apostles of the region. God has already raised up for us a key apostle in one of the strategic nations of the Middle East and other apostles are already coming on board. Once we have the apostles in place, we will then bring the intercessors and the prophets into the inner circle, and we will end up with the spiritual core we need to move ahead for retaking the dominion that is rightfully ours”.
Dominionists believe that they should be actively involved in politics to become ‘soldiers in the Joel`s army, the army of God’. Here is a quotation from their website: ”An end-time army has one common purpose – to aggressively take ground for the kingdom of God under the authority of Jesus Christ, the Dread Champion. The trumpet is sounding, calling on-fire, revolutionary believers to enlist in Joel’s Army.” (2)
Sarah Palin had earlier announced her plans to return to politics, and this is very likely to happen with active support from aggressive protestants.
The second lady has managed to do much more in the international politics. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen is the chairwoman of the House Foreign Affairs Committee and does not hide her dislike of Obama’s policy and the reset of relations with Russia. The telling fact is that it was because of “the witch of the Capitol Hill” or “the ferocious she-wolf”, this is how Ros-Lehtinen is often called, the cooperation between the State Duma, the lower house of Russian parliament and the US Congress stopped (3).
Other merits and examples of the political rhetoric of Ros-Lehtinen are not less telling. Her Cuban origin definitely affects her policy regarding the Island of Freedom. In 1980-s, she lobbied the release of Orlando Bosh, who was one of the organizers of the explosion of the Cuban airliner in 1976. Thanks to her help he quietly spent the rest of his life in Florida. She also actively defended and supported another terrorist – Luis Posada Carriles and spoke in defense of Valentine Hernandez, suspected of the murder of Luciano Nieves, who maintained ties with the Cuban government. Ros-Lehtinen openly advocated for political murders when she said to the British reporters in 2006 “I welcome the opportunity of having anyone assassinate Fidel Castro and any leader who is oppressing the people”. In 2004, she initiated the establishment of Cuba Democracy Group – a puppet organization, which goal was to prevent any economic interaction between Commercial and banking institutions of the US and Cuba.
In 2000, Ros-Lehtinen was one the organizers of the illegal seizure of a Cuban boy Elián González in the US. When the US Justice had to settle the case in favor of the boy and his father she urged the Miami mafia to openly break the law just to protect the child from “that system of godless communism” (4).
The congresswoman does not hide her aggressive intentions towards the Cuban Five, whose members are in prison in the US, and which played the leading role in bringing an ungrounded verdict.
But the witch of the Capitol Hill does not forget about other countries.
In 1999, Ros-Lehtinen upheld the bombardment of Yugoslavia and in 2008 Saakashvili’s aggression against South Ossetia.
Speaking in Congress in 2001 at a meeting dedicated to the countries of Central Asia she explicitly said: “The message we should send to these leaders is very simple: Democracy and respect for human rights are basic values for the United States government and its people. We will continue to press you on these issues at every opportunity”. (5).
In 2007, after the Munich speech of Vladimir Putin, (then the Russian President now the Prime Minister) she sent a letter to the US State Secretary Condoleezza Rice. In that document she openly said that “gas OPEC “, Russia was going to take part in, was a “global extortion racket” organization. Ros-Lehtinen asked Condoleezza Rice to inform the Russian party that Moscow’s participation in the gas cartel would be regarded as “unfriendly move” (6).
In February 2008, the Committee of the House of Representatives of the US Congress adopted the resolution containing the version of the involvement of the Russian in the poisoning of Alexander Litvinenko. The document was prepared by Ileana Ros-Lehtinen. The resolution written in hysterical style read: “The use of such radioactive materials in such cases demonstrates a threat to the safety and security of the people of the Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, the United States and other countries.”
In August 2010, she urged sanctions against Russia and China saying that “it’s time to implement our sanctions laws and demonstrate to Russia and China that there are consequences for abetting Tehran and flouting US sanctions” (7). On March 17 2011, she said: “spreading nuclear facilities to unstable regimes throughout the Middle East and the Third World… is laying the groundwork for potential disaster and a vast expansion of proliferation opportunities… Russia and France are the most irresponsible in this regard, with their most senior officials acting as salesmen for their state-owned nuclear corporations”. It is interesting that this statement was made after the nuclear disaster at the Fukushima-1 nuclear plant in Japan where the US nuclear technologies were applied!
In December 2010, when meeting Turkey’s ambassador in the US Namik Tan she demanded that Turkish troops should be withdrawn from Cyprus. She also said that the policy regarding the Constantinople patriarchate should be changed and to open the school Halki, one of the former spiritual centers of Orthodoxy located at the island not far from Istanbul which was closed by the Turkish authorities in 1971. She added that “’these are issues, which must be addressed soon if we are to avoid irrevocable damage to the relations between the US and Turkey” (8). Though Ros-Lehtinen belongs to the Episcopalian Church of the US she is simultaneously a big friend of the Church of Scientology. This did not prevent her from reminding the Turkish diplomat of the Orthodox shrines.
In the US the Episcopalian Church was traditionally regarded as the church for the elite and the people from the ruling circles of the US often belong to this church. Recently, this church began to allow homosexual marriages and there are women and homosexuals among its bishops. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen actively supports the LGBT movement and is the vice president in one of the organizations of sodomites – the group for the equal rights of sex minorities. This is not typical for Republicans because protection of the rights of gays has always been on the agenda of Democrats. It does not look like a cognitive disorder in the head of a middle aged woman politician. This “service record” simply shows what level of hypocrisy one can reach in the big politics in the US by manipulating different narratives.
Harvey Cox, a popular theologian in the US, who claims that God equally presents himself in civil and religious spheres of life, said once that Americans are such a religious nation because everyday they practice the civil religion of the US which is  democracy.
It seems that there is a grain of truth in his words because in this context  “democracy” is a secret deal between certain political forces and business circles of the US and they intend to promote it by any means – by threatening and bullying, by appealing to the values of Protestantism and by means of sodomy.
